The lawsuit seeks monetary damages for current and former CHL players
The Lawsuit
The NCAA and its member institutions prohibit anyone who ever played in the Canadian Hockey League (“CHL”) from playing NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey. In a class action lawsuit filed against the NCAA and others in the United States District Court for the Western District of New York on August 12, 2024, a former CHL player has alleged that this rule violates federal antitrust law.
The lawsuit seeks monetary damages for current and former CHL players, including for (i) the value of NCAA Division I athletic scholarships that they could not receive as a result of the NCAA’s rule, and (ii) the additional compensation that they allegedly would have received from their CHL teams if the NCAA’s rule did not exist. In addition, the lawsuit seeks a court order that would prohibit the NCAA and its members from barring current and former CHL players from playing Division I men’s ice hockey. As a result, if the lawsuit is successful, the NCAA and its member institutions will no longer be permitted to deprive current and former CHL players of the opportunity to play Division I men’s ice hockey, and current and former CHL players may receive substantial compensation for harm caused by the NCAA’s rule.
Defendants
The defendant schools are all NCAA Division I colleges and universities offering men’s ice hockey. They are Canisius University, Niagara University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Boston College, Boston University, University of Denver, Quinnipiac University, University of Notre Dame, Stonehill College, and University of St. Thomas.
